The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved a new Asset Monetisation Policy aimed at improving the financial sustainability of urban local bodies by enabling them to generate long-term revenue from underutilised public assets.
The policy will cover 29 municipal corporations, 239 municipal councils, and 743 nagar panchayats across the state. It allows these local bodies to unlock the value of assets such as land, public buildings, commercial complexes, and markets through planned development and strategic investments.
To encourage efficient project execution, the policy supports development through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models and other investment mechanisms. The revenue generated is expected to strengthen municipal finances and support investments in urban infrastructure and public services.
The state government has stated that all projects will be awarded through transparent and competitive processes, with an emphasis on accountability, public interest, and responsible private sector participation.
