Focus: Critical Minerals | Mining | Industrial Technology

India is stepping up efforts to strengthen its rare earth processing capabilities, aiming to transform domestic mineral resources into commercially viable materials and reduce dependence on overseas supply chains.

The initiative focuses on advancing processing technologies and scaling them up for commercial deployment. It forms part of India's broader push to establish an integrated domestic critical minerals ecosystem, covering key stages from mineral extraction and processing to the supply of essential materials for industrial applications.

Rare earth elements are important components in several advanced technologies, including electric vehicle motors, wind turbines, electronics, defence equipment and renewable energy systems. Building stronger domestic processing capacity could help India improve supply-chain resilience and support the growth of strategic manufacturing sectors.

However, developing a competitive processing ecosystem will require continued investment in research, industrial infrastructure, efficient extraction methods and environmentally responsible mineral recovery.

As global competition for critical minerals intensifies, India's efforts to expand domestic processing capabilities could become an important step towards strengthening its industrial and technological self-reliance.
