Ooty, Tamil Nadu: Ooty MLA M. Bhojarajan has called on the Centre to bring the Ooty Municipality under the Smart Cities Mission, with the objective of strengthening civic infrastructure and improving the town’s long-term tourism potential.
The proposal comes amid the growing infrastructure demands faced by Ooty, one of Tamil Nadu’s major hill tourism destinations. Improved urban infrastructure could help address challenges related to mobility, public amenities, waste management, drainage, sanitation and other essential civic services.
According to the MLA, inclusion under the Smart City framework could provide Ooty with access to structured infrastructure development and technology-led urban solutions, while supporting the needs of both residents and the large number of tourists visiting the hill town.
The push also highlights the need for tourism-focused cities to balance visitor growth with infrastructure capacity, environmental considerations and quality of life for local communities.
If considered by the Centre, the proposal could open the way for a more integrated approach to Ooty’s urban and tourism infrastructure, potentially positioning the hill town for more sustainable long-term development.
