MDL has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park Maharashtra Limited (NShipML) to support the development of a greenfield shipbuilding facility at Dighi.
The proposed facility is planned with an annual capacity of at least 2 million gross tonnage (GT) and is intended to support the construction of large commercial vessels.
Beyond expanding Maharashtra’s maritime manufacturing capabilities, the project is expected to have a significant employment impact. The proposed development could generate approximately 15,000 direct jobs and 75,000 indirect jobs, taking the estimated employment potential to around 90,000 positions.
NShipML has been established as a special purpose vehicle by the Maharashtra Maritime Board and Mumbai Port Authority to facilitate the development of a greenfield shipbuilding cluster in the state.
The proposed Dighi facility could strengthen Maharashtra’s position in shipbuilding and create a larger industrial ecosystem around maritime manufacturing, heavy engineering, logistics and allied industries.
