The state-owned transmission company received the Letter of Intent on 2 September after emerging as the successful bidder under the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding process. The project will be developed under the Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) model.
A key component of the project will be the development of ±800 kV HVDC terminals at Barmer-II in Rajasthan and South Kalamb in Maharashtra. The South Kalamb substation will also undergo capacity augmentation to support the additional power transfer.
The project will establish an approximately 1,000-km ±800 kV HVDC bipole transmission corridor, linking Rajasthan with Maharashtra through Gujarat. The high-capacity corridor is expected to play an important role in moving renewable electricity from Rajasthan’s large-scale generation zones to demand centres in western India.
In addition to the HVDC infrastructure, the project includes 400 kV transmission lines, associated bays and two synchronous condenser units at the Barmer-II power station.
